The Profaned Guardians are usually the first Post-Moon Lord bosses that you will face in your playthrough. The Profaned Guardians are summoned by using the Profaned Shard in The Hallow or The Underworld biome during the day.

This guide will mention items exclusive to Expert and Revengeance Mode with no special formatting and will follow the intended progression.

Terrain Preparation[]

A long platform is generally enough for this boss. Ensure that you have plenty of room to run along. If you previously built a long platform to fight the Wall of Flesh, that can be reused here.

A modestly sized square arena will also be an acceptable choice, especially in the underworld, where maintaining the Hallow biome is not a concern.

It is imperative that you remain within the Hallow or in the Underworld. Actuators are a great tool in expanding the Hallow in an arena without getting in the way.

If you are doing the fight in Malice Mode you should make the platform out of Asphalt Blocks as it makes the fight considerably easier.

Consider fighting underwater if you’re struggling. This will weaken all of the fire attacks sent at you.

Weapons[]

The weapons made from Luminite Bars are typically the best options for the fight.

Melee[]

  • The True Biome Blade is an excellent option with homing and high single target damage.
  • The Ark of the Elements and the Plague Keeper have faster homing at the cost of lower DPS.
  • The Stellar Striker is an extremely powerful true melee option that makes quick work of the guardians.
  • The Elemental Disk is an excellent choice, being able to hit both the Rock and Crystal Guardians at the same time.
  • Stellar Contempt performs similarly with high raw damage while being able to strike more than one guardian.

Ranged[]

Mage[]

  • Although DPS is lower, Nuclear Fury is a good homing option allowing the player to focus on dodging.
  • The Apoctosis Array deals immense damage when high on mana. As this weapon requires attentive management of mana, the use of the Mana Flower is discouraged when using this weapon.

Summoner[]

  • The Elemental Axe is a good option being able to easily target and kill all the guardians.
  • The Tactical Plague Engine is also a good option but requires a lot of ammo due to its high fire rate.
  • The Energy Staff provides additional DPS to aid the player's minions.

Rogue[]

  • Both the Elemental Disk and Stellar Contempt perform similarly to their Melee counterparts, dealing good DPS at the cost of smaller range.
  • The Utensil Poker is an extremely viable option due to its massive damage output.
  • Lunar Kunai are useful for this fight as they are able to home. In addition to this, they can deal immense damage to the guardians.

Miscellaneous[]

  • The Well Fed buff provides a useful all around stat boost.
  • Farm Blood Orbs to easily craft many helpful potions that will increase your survivability.

The Fight[]

The Profaned Guardians will spawn offscreen, meaning you should be prepared to dodge them as they approach you.

For purposes of clarity, the Guardians will be referred to as their in game names, with the Main Guardian being the Commander Guardian, the Rock Guardian being the Defender Guardian, and the Crystal Guardian being the Healer Guardian.

When summoned, the Commander Guardian will be practically invincible. Until the Healing Guardian and the Defender Guardian are defeated, the Commander Guardian will have insane health regeneration and defense, respectively. When the fight begins, the Guardians will charge at you in a standard formation: The Commander Guardian will lead and fire two large, persisting flame projectiles at the player in a V shape, the Defender Guardian will follow shortly behind while firing slower and shorter range flame projectiles, and the Healer Guardian will attempt to stay as far away as possible, providing immense health regeneration to both other guardians. These have predictable gaps, so considerable attention should be given to ensure the player can pass through them safely. The Commander and Defender will operate within incredibly close proximity for the majority of the fight, with the Commander often speeding in front of the Defender and tanking the majority of the hits if fired at directly. Both guardians will now fire Profaned Flame projectiles which will linger, so be careful not to hit them while dodging the dashes or profaned spears. The Rod of Discord or Normality Relocator can be used effectively here to escape a dire situation in a pinch. Magic and Summon players, however, should maintain their distance, especially when using a penetrating weapon such as the Last Prism or the natural targeting of summons. Upon defeating the Defender Guardian, the Commander Guardian will enter its final phase, and an incredibly quick flurry of attacks will follow. Killing the Commander as fast as possible is imperative, although getting hit by its attacks will leave the player with very little HP remaining. The easiest way to defeat the first phase (Upon killing the Healer, the AI of the Commander and Defender will change) is to constantly move up and down, which will typically prevent a single flame from touching the player. When the Healer is defeated, the Commander and Defender will begin charging at the player, and with each charge, the Commander will release six Profaned Spears, while the Defender will release ten, both in a circular pattern. Make sure to go underwater often to negate all of the flame attacks. For players in Revengeance+, a good strategy is to build Adrenaline during the Healer phase due to the ease of which you can dodge and kill the Healer, then activate Adrenaline and, if possible, Rage, which will increase your damage substantially. To deal with the Defender, it's a good idea to play aggressively, to separate the Commander and the Defender, leaving you able to damage the Defender as opposed to the Commander blocking him. This goes twofold for Revengeance+, where the Commander will now deal significantly higher damage from all of its attacks. Maintain distance, and use Adrenaline or just chip away as much as possible. Avoid running into the many traps it will set around the arena, such as its exploding flares.

The enrage can be dangerous, but is actually quite manageable. Consider fighting the Profaned Guardians in the ocean. This will make it easy to extinguish their fire attacks if you’re low on health.

General Tips[]

  • The Normality Relocator or Rod of Discord are very strong tools as they allow instantaneous teleporting.
    • Be wary when teleporting with the Normality Relocator, as the player will fall at a much greater pace if unprepared in a similar manner to the Portal Gun.
  • The Ultra Liquidator can also be used to apply Ichor and Cursed Flames for other classes such as Ranger.
    • The Ultra Liquidator activates the Summoner nerf. As such, the Golden Gun should be used to apply Ichor instead.
